Environmental Credentials

We have built a comfortable guesthouse, using solar passive design principles, recycled and environmentally sustainable materials with a solar renewable energy system and solar hot water. In 2011 we added a water turbine which should make us self sufficient in power. If you are interested in our water turbine set up we will more than pleased to show you how it works.

Our meals are prepared using largely organic produce where we can source it locally. We also purchase as much additional food as we can from our local district to ensure low food miles and fresh quality food. We grow as much as we can ourselves and our neighbours have started offering us their excess produce eg nashi pears, organic lamb, home grown garlic and free range eggs.

We have 34 hectares of land on the south side of Quamby Bluff on the Great Western Tiers and most of the property has been placed under a conservation covenant because of its high biodiversity values. On the property and adjacent to it are some interesting and rare oldgrowth forest communities. The property also has a wide range of birds, many of them endemic as well as most of Tasmania’s animal species. It has been dedicated as Land for Wildlife.

Our architect, builder and almost all the trades and crafts people who worked on our house are locals and we have decorated the house with beautiful art and craft work from local artists. The art trail on the property is the legacy of successive Forest festivals which we have hosted.

We recycle all our waste, including all water from the house, and use environmentally friendly cleaning products. Our new orchard is soaking up the nutrient rich water from our biolytix treatment system.

We have held leading positions with some of Australia’s most well known environment organisations and support our local community through local environment action.
