Fly Fishing
Forest Walks Lodge is bordered by a natural stream with brown trout in deep pools. It is
suitable for fishing with a small rod but this takes some skill due to the size of the stream.
Nearby Huntsman Lake is also well
stocked with trout and has become increasingly popular with anglers over the past two years. It is most suitable for beginners.
Fly fishing opportunities near-by
The Meander River and some of the nearby highland lakes
are also great for fishing. For the Meander River you will need waders.
Local fly fishing guide Trevor Berne is available at Forest Walks Lodge to give tuition to
beginners and discuss the local fishing hot spots with other anglers.
Forest Walks Lodge is the nearest accommodation to Huntsman Lake and the upper reaches of the Meander River.
Book a package which includes all meals and experience the daily joy of standing knee deep in fresh water chasing the trout in the knowledge that all your other needs are taken care of.
Trevor Berne, our guide, has been fishing for 40 years, teaching for 14 and guiding professionally for 10 years.
He is a member of Flyfish Australia and a local Tasmanian chapter member as well as captaining the Austalian Commonwealth team to
New Zealand in 2008. He is a wonderful teacher with lots of enthusiasm and knowledge and equally able to teach beginners and provide relevant instruction and local knowledge to the already proficient.
Testamonials
"I recall being quietly amazed that barely two hundred metres from the lodge lay every flyfisherman’s paradise…
a stunning, small, quintessentially Tasmanian stream, in places only a few metres wide and, unforgettably pristine, gin-clear water,
the clarity was such that every stone could been seen. And when turned over, these stones revealed a profusion of sub-aquatic life…
a great mixture of nymphs, caddis, and water-snails.
" Vince, Melbourne, November 2010.
"The section of Jacky's Marsh Creek that flows through the open fields out
the front of the Forest Walks Eco-lodge is such a gem. This is
small-stream flyfishing at its best. Tight corners, deep meanders and
a clear, freestone bottom make this a joy to fish with a 3-4w rod, and
the rewards for precision and stealth are trout in double figures. And
while its easy to cover a couple of kilometers, with so many tight
meanders, you're never far from the lodge, where Sean can cook up your
catch to perfection. I'll be back!" Joel, Canberra, May 2011
